The Center for Ethical Youth Coaching Code of Values and Ethics
1- An ethical youth coach recognizes that one of the primary reasons kids play sports is to have fun and be social. An ethical youth coach works to promote the fun and social aspects of sports.
2- An ethical youth coach works to educate parents on putting winning in the proper perspective and that sport, particularly at the youngest levels, is not solely about winning or getting a scholarship.
3- An ethical youth coach, in regards to his or her communication, opportunity, attitude and discipline, treats every player equally no matter the player’s gender, race, religion, socioeconomic background, cultural background, physical characteristics, mental characteristics, and sexual orientation.
4- Academics always take priority over sports.
5- If an ethical youth coach is unsure of his or her abilities in handling any situation, he or she will seek the advice of someone more knowledgeable, or the best resource he or she can find.
6- An ethical youth coach will never stop learning about his or her sport and always welcomes feedback from his or her athletes, fellow coaches, parents and the community.
7- The drive to win will never overshadow the importance of character development.
8- An ethical youth coach will always work to preserve self-esteem and build player confidence.
9- An ethical youth coach will always maintain an open line of communication with parents.
10- An ethical youth coach will never accept gifts from parents that are conditioned upon their daughter or son receiving special treatment.
11- An ethical youth coach will never allow a parent to influence their decision on playing time.
12- An ethical youth coach will inform players and parents about the team rules and the league rules.
13- An ethical youth coach will follow all rules set forth by the team and league that he or she coaches in.
14- Both coaches and players will at all times show the utmost respect to league officials, administrators and parents.
15- An ethical youth coach will not tolerate profanity by coaches, players, parents, fans, league officials and league administrators.
16- If an ethical youth coach uses disciplinary techniques for player misconduct they must align with the values and ethics set forth by the Center for Ethical Youth Coaching. Having consequences for inappropriate behavior and violation of team rules is okay, however, these consequences must never jeopardize the safety, health and mental well being of the player or team.
17- An ethical youth coach will strive to involve every player in the game.
18- An ethical youth coach will follow a safe training plan.
19- Physical abuse and emotional abuse of players will not be tolerated, and any occurrence will be immediately reported to both the police and appropriate league official.
20- Yelling has no place in sports. An ethical youth coach will motivate his or her players through respect, passion and intellect, not intimidation.
21- An ethical youth coach is always prepared to handle medical emergencies in the appropriate manner.
22- An ethical youth coach will make every attempt to show up to practices and games on time.
23- An ethical youth coach will make himself or herself available to the team outside of practices and games.
24- An ethical youth coach will encourage a healthy lifestyle.
25- The goal of the ethical youth coach is to develop the “complete player” as defined by the Center for Ethical Youth Coaching.
26- An Ethical youth coach stresses the importance of community service.
27- Gambling has no place on an Ethical Youth Coach’s team or within the league he or she coaches. An ethical youth coach will not discuss gambling in any form directly or indirectly with his or her players.
28- An ethical youth coach creates a climate of respect on his or her team. Paramount to this principle is respectful communication by both players and coaches.
